Statement:

This project is about the Assimilation and Migration of families that were separated and left behind during the Vietnam War, the influenced decor and design of the late 1800s to mid 1900s were the result of the French colonization of Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, fear of persecution there were numerous families that became "Boat People" and fled to Malaysia, Canada and eventually the United States. The wallpaper is a familiar design that associates and represents family, time, and home. As Eastern culture becomes a western culture, these people become more universal and are more apparent. The purpose of these portraits were meant to be keepsake memories of that time, but instead acts as a barrier and metaphor for absence and separation.
