ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been thinking about “time” as a conceptual source of inspiration. I am particularly interested in the passage of time and documenting the changes. We are rarely consciously aware of the time we spend each day. It is not until something big shakes us up, such as our own mortality or that of loved ones, that we notice the preciousness of time. We become keenly aware of time when we are confronted with life altering changes. Intense events seem to alter our perception of time. Our heightened awareness of time draws attention to the inter-connectedness of humanity and nature.

My current work has been inspired by these reflections on the passage of time. The materials and processes I use inform the under laying conceptual language of my work. I use both hard and soft materials to contrast and juxtapose visual elements. The casting of bronze, glass and ice are processes that also address an aspect of time The perception of time is relative. Watching ice melt for 13 hours may seem like a long time, but it is like a drop in the ocean compared to the gradual healing process after an accident. I use many time-consuming techniques in the creation of my art work. The slow progression of the pieces gives me a sense of connectedness between myself and the world around me.
